The whole idea

Spot the one that isn't dessert.

Real taiyaki. Real soft serve. And the Chai-brator, which only looks the part. It sits on a nightstand, in a gym bag or on a bathroom shelf and nobody asks a single question.

An engraving in the style of an early twentieth century advertisement

Historical advertising claims. None of them is a claim for this product.

What the 1910 catalogues promised
  • Deafness
  • Malaria
  • Lassitude
  • Gout
  • Weak eyes
  • Dandruff
  • Neuralgia
  • Lumbago
  • Insomnia
  • Writer's cramp
  • Catarrh
  • Cold feet

A century of promises. We kept the five speeds.

For a hundred years this object was sold as a household appliance that cured most of what ailed you. None of it was true. We make one promise: it looks like dessert. That one we can keep.

Not a medical device. Not a dessert. Do not eat. Do charge.

Travel

Fits in the snack pocket. Raises exactly zero questions.

Travel lock on, it goes through a bag, a drawer or airport security as what it looks like: a small silicone dessert. If someone does ask, it is a Chai the Taiyaki figure. Which is also true.

Questions people actually ask

Is this a real product or a joke?

Real. Colorful Cook has poured silicone by hand for three years; the Chai-brator is their first factory-made piece. The campaign has passed its $6,000 goal more than twice over.

Where do you ship?

The US and most of the world. Not the EU (GPSR rules), and not Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Afghanistan, Lebanon or Yemen.

Can I get a refund?

Once the campaign closes on October 6, no. Read the campaign page before you pledge.

Why does it look like dessert?

Because the alternative was a black cylinder. Colorful Cook's whole studio is built around Chai the Taiyaki. This is Chai with a job.

Who makes it?

Colorful Cook, an independent studio with three years of hand-poured silicone sculpture behind it. The shop is colorful-cook.com, 18+ at the door.
